 East Java is a province in the eastern part of Java Island, Indonesia. Its capital is located in Surabaya. Its area is 47 922 km², and a population of 37,476,757 inhabitants (2010). East Java has the largest area among the six provinces on the island of Java, and has the second largest population in Indonesia after West Java. East Java in the Java Sea in the north, the Strait of Bali in the east, the Indian Ocean in the south, as well as in the western province of Central Java. East Java region also includes the island of Madura, Bawean, Kangean Island and several small islands in the Java Sea and the Indian Ocean (Sempu Island and Nusa Barong).
